The International Skating Union (ISU) announced on Tuesday it stripped the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) of the gold medal won in the mixed figure skating event at the 2022 Winter Olympics after the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) found that one of the team members, Kamila Valieva, used prohibited performance-enhancing drugs.
Following the WADA's decision, the ICU removed Valieva's results from all the competitions she participated in in the five years beginning December 25, 2021, including the Olympics in Beijing. With her scores erased, the ROC dropped to third place and will be given the bronze medal instead. The gold medal was awarded to the United States, and the silver to Japan.
Russia was forced to compete in Beijing as the ROC after the WADA determined the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) did not comply with international standards in testing athletes and thus assisted in the alleged state-sponsored doping scheme.
