United States President Donald Trump provoked the Capitol Hill riots on January 6, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell claimed on Tuesday.
"The mob was fed lies. They were provoked by the president and other powerful people. And they tried to use fear and violence to stop a specific proceeding of the first branch of the federal government which they did not like," the Republican leader asserted.
Last week, Trump became the first president to be impeached for the second time by the House, this time for a "willful incitement of insurrection." While the majority of the GOP representatives refused to support the impeachment, their leader Kevin McCarthy stated the president "bears responsibility" for the attack on the Capitol.
