China's military conducted a joint "combat patrol" near the disputed Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea, the country's Southern Theatre Command said in a post on the WeChat app Wednesday.

The military carried out the joint patrol in the "sea and airspace" near the shoal, to test the "rapid mobility and joint strike capabilities" of its troops.

The uninhabited reef is also claimed by the Philippines and proves to be one of the region's most contested maritime features.
