United States President Donald Trump said on Thursday that his administration will impose a 200% tariff on wine, champagne and other alcoholic exports from France and other European Union states if the EU does not remove its "nasty" 50% tariff on US whisky.

In a Truth Social post, Trump called the EU "one of the most hostile and abusive taxing and tariffing authorities in the World" and repeated his claim that it was "formed for the sole purpose of taking advantage of the United States." After Trump's tariffs on steel and aluminum took effect yesterday, the EU announced countermeasures targeting €26 billion of US goods.
