$400B required to restore Syria's economy - Assad

In a meeting with Russian representatives who visited Damascus the day after Western airstrikes, President of the Syrian Arab Republic Bashar al-Assad estimated that more than $400 billion dollars will be necessary to restore the economy of his country to pre-war levels.

The coordinator of the group of Russia’s State Duma for ties with the Syrian parliament Dmitry Sablin conveyed Assad's assertion that it will take 10-15 years to rebuild his country's infrastructure, devastated by war. According to Sablin, Assad would not like to see American investment in Syria, especially in the energy sector. "We want Russian companies to work here, and we expect their fast market entry," Assad reportedly told Russian parliamentarians.

The Syrian president favored closer cooperation with Russia, specifically between the subnational entities of the two countries, such as between the Moscow Region and Damascus Governorate and between Syrian port of Tartus and Russian federal city of Sevastopol.
