22 countries signed a statement at the COP28 climate summit committing to tripling nuclear energy capacity by 2050. The states, including the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Japan, and the United Arab Emirates, cited reports by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development and the World Nuclear Association which found nuclear energy capacity must triple in order to achieve global net-zero greenhouse gas emissions and keep global warming below 1.5 degrees by 2050.
The countries also committed to ensuring that nuclear power plants are "operated responsibly and in line with the highest standards of safety, sustainability, security, and non-proliferation, and that fuel waste is responsibly managed for the long term." They also pledged to mobilize investments in nuclear power and to promote "resilient supply chains."
