The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) warned on Tuesday that the market's shift toward fully electrified vehicles has put more than 22,000 jobs across the United Kingdom at risk of becoming redundant.
The British government's plan to phase out combustion engines by 2035 will also prompt around 15% of production jobs in the auto industry to become unneeded, including workers developing and maintaining engines, exhaust systems, and fuel tanks.
"While some companies are already on the journey, many risk being left behind as the jobs and skills involved with internal combustion engine technology may not be transferable," the SMMT concluded, since forecasts estimate fewer jobs will open compared to those that will fade in the upcoming years.
