A powerful 5.0-magnitude earthquake shook the Southern Ibaraki prefecture in Japan on Wednesday, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
The tremor was observed at 5:40 pm local time about 60 kilometers northeast of Tokyo at a depth of 50 km and measured an upper 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity "shindo" scale of 7.
No tsunami warning was issued. The country sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, making it prone to earthquakes. In September, a 5.2-magnitude quake shook the northern region close to the Japanese city of Matusu.
