The number of jobs in the private sector in the United States grew by 62,000 in September, according to the ADP National Employment Report released on Wednesday. The figure was much lower than analysts anticipated.
"Unease is the word of the day. Employers are trying to reconcile policy and consumer uncertainty with a run of mostly positive economic data. It can be difficult to make hiring decisions in such an environment," Nela Richardson, chief economist at ADP stated.
Medium companies added 40,000 jobs, while jobs in small businesses and large companies grew by 11,000 and 12,000, respectively. The number of jobs in the service sector climbed by 34,000, most of which were in leisure and hospitality and trade, transportation and utilities. On the other hand, payrolls declined by 23,000 in education and health services. The number of jobs in the goods-producing sector was up by 26,000, most coming from construction.
