The United States Department of Justice (DoJ) said that an Afghan national living in Oklahoma was arrested and accused of plotting an Election Day attack targeting large crowds in the US.
Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi, 27, is alleged to have taken steps to liquidate his family's assets, resettle members of his family overseas and purchase automatic weapons and ammunition in order to advance his alleged plan to carry out the attack. He allegedly told investigators that both he and a juvenile co-conspirator expected to die as martyrs.
"This defendant, motivated by ISIS, allegedly conspired to commit a violent attack, on election day, here on our homeland," FBI Director Christopher Wray said in a statement. "Terrorism is still the FBI's number one priority, and we will use every resource to protect the American people," Wray added.
