Airlines cancels 22 flights in Mexico City’s over volcano ashes

MEXICAN GOVERNMENT

Mexico City International Airport reported that local and international airlines have been forced to cancel 22 flights during the day, as ashes from the Popocatepetl volcano were encountered while hovering towards the capital and provoked safety inspections.

The airport stressed it remains open and operational while "management personnel and specialized teams remain on alert and are evaluating ash fall conditions."Currently, the volcanic ash cloud is heading towards the Gulf of Mexico, it added.

In recent days, national authorities issued a yellow alert and warned residents not to approach the crater after the volcano activity increased.
