Apple Inc. has suspended plans to use chips made by Yangtze Memory Technologies Co. (YMTC) in its products after the introduction of the latest United States restrictions on Chinese companies, Nikkei reported on Monday citing sources familiar with the matter.
According to sources, Apple had wanted to start using YMTC's memory chips from this year because they are at least 20% cheaper than rivals' products.
The tech giant reportedly already completed a months-long process of certification of YMTC's 128-layer 3D NAND flash memory for use in iPhones but abandoned plans to use the chip after Washington put YMTC on the so-called "unverified list," a list of companies for which the US could not verify that they can be trusted to handle sensitive technology exports.
