Apple is in early discussions with China's Baidu to use the tech giant's generative AI technology in Apple devices within China, The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, citing people with knowledge of the matter.

The move is part of Apple's broader strategy to enhance its AI capabilities through partnerships with leading technology firms, including Google and OpenAI. The partnership with Baidu is crucial for Apple to navigate China's regulatory environment, which mandates local vetting of AI models by its cyberspace controller.

Moreover, the push comes as consumer electronics companies globally are leveraging generative AI to innovate and revive sales. Apple, for its part, aims to use the technology to improve various features such as voice assistance and photo editing. According to the source, Apple's talks with Baidu remain in the initial phase.
