Apple Inc. is seeking to open a final assembly unit for iPhones in Indonesia to have that country suspend a ban on the sales of iPhone 16, Nikkei Asia reported on Thursday.

According to a source familiar with the matter, one of the iPhone assemblers has already established a subsidiary in the city of Batam and begun hiring engineers to prepare for the technology giant's arrival. Another source added that the company is waiting for the deal to be official to start constructing a facility, projected to be completed in no earlier than a year.

Indonesia previously banned the sales of iPhone 16 as it did not comply with the law requiring at least 35% of the components comprising smartphones sold there to be made in the country.
