United States interim attorney for the Southern District of New York, Danielle Sassoon, resigned on Thursday to avoid following an order by the US Justice Department to drop the corruption charges against New York City Mayor Eric Adams (pictured), the Associated Press reported, citing a spokesperson for the office.

The Manhattan federal prosecutor's resignation came after acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove reportedly ordered New York attorneys to drop the case against the mayor so that he can help United States President Donald Trump "crack down on immigration."

Adams' trial on federal corruption charges was scheduled to begin on April 21, after he was charged in September with wire fraud, bribery, conspiracy, and two counts of unlawfully accepting and receiving campaign donations from foreign nationals.
