Austria appointed a new government on Monday led by the conservative People's Party (OVP) in a coalition with the Social Democratic Party (SPO), and the liberal Neos party with Christian Stocker assuming the post of chancellor.
The new government took office after a five-month-long political deadlock and after previous negotiations to form a three-party coalition between OVP, SPO, and Neos failed. The three-party coalition was formed after the leader of the Freedom Party of Austria (FPO) Herbert Kickl was unable to form a cabinet even though his party received most votes in the September 2024 legislative election.
Austria's new cabinet pledged to address the central European country's economic problems and pursue a stricter immigration policy.
