Auto parts imports will get a one-month exemption from United States President Donald Trump's 25% automotive tariff, according to his order.
The order says that automobiles will be subject to the 25% tariff "on or after 12:01 a.m. eastern daylight time on April 3, 2025," however, auto parts will be subject to the tariff on a date to be announced in a Federal Register notice, "but no later than May 3, 2025." For automobiles that fall under the USMCA, importers "may submit documentation to the Secretary identifying the amount of US content in each model imported into the United States," the order says.
"Thereafter, the Secretary may approve imports of such automobiles to be eligible to apply the ad valorem tariff of 25 percent exclusively to the value of the non-US content of the automobile. The non-US content of the automobile shall be calculated by subtracting the value of the U.S. content in an automobile from the total value of the automobile," the proclamation reads.
