Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba acknowledged Sunday that the ruling coalition is in a close contest in the national elections.

Speaking to NHK at 10:25 pm, Ishiba noted that vote counting was still underway and refrained from declaring victory or defeat. He said the Liberal Democratic Party, together with its junior partner Komeito, was aiming for a simple majority, but emphasized that the final results would have to be awaited.

"We are still the party with the largest number of seats," Ishiba said, adding that the coalition remains committed to its campaign promises, especially on economic resilience and national security.
