BMW will recall more than one million cars in China over an issue with Takata airbags, the country's State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) announced on Friday.
"A small number of vehicles included in this recall may have their frontal airbags installed with ammonium nitrate gas generators produced by Takata without desiccant due to users modifying the steering wheel after the vehicle was sold. When the airbag is deployed, the gas generator may explode, causing fragments to fly out and injure people in the vehicle, posing a safety hazard," the regulator noted and added customers can test if their steering wheel may be affected online or contact dealers for an inspection.
The SAMR stressed the recall includes both China-made and imported vehicles made between 2004 and 2018.
