Wildfires sweeping through California this month that have spread to the Hollywood Hills are "rapidly expanding," with firefighters making "zero progress" in controlling the flames, the state's fire service battalion chief, David Acuna, told BBC's Today program on Thursday.
According to the battalion chief, fires at this time of the year are rare, having happened only twice in the past 30 years. "It is amazing that this climate change and these conditions have led to where we are now in a significant position of threat," Acuna said.
Currently, five active wildfires are raging across Los Angeles, burning nearly 27,000 acres of land. The Eaton Fire alone has claimed five lives, while more than 130,000 residents have been forced to evacuate the city.
