United States President Joe Biden approved an emergency declaration request for New York in an effort to mitigate the effects of the winter storm that the state has been grappling with in the past week, the White House announced in a statement.
The president granted the request of New York Governor Kathy Hochul, who called on the administration to declare a major disaster over worries about the storm already claiming the lives of two dozen people.
Through the decision, New York will receive assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to alleviate the impacts of the emergency. " Emergency protective measures (Category B), including direct Federal assistance, under the Public Assistance program will be provided at 75 percent Federal funding," the White House said.
