United States President Joe Biden promised on Thursday to defend the Philippines from any attack in the South China Sea as he attended the first-ever trilateral summit with Manila and Tokyo, Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported.
During his meeting with Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, Biden stated that the US defense commitment to Japan and to the Philippines is "ironclad," warning that "Any attack on Philippine aircraft, vessels or armed forces in the South China Sea would invoke our mutual defense treaty."
The three countries will reportedly announce naval exercises that will include Australia, while also unveiling new economic cooperation measures, according to officials cited by the news agency.
