United States President Joe Biden remarked on Wednesday the Republican members of the House of Representatives dedicated to the Make America Great Again (MAGA) ideology are taking control of the lower congressional institution and "holding the economy hostage by threatening a default on our country's debt."
Speaking at an Investing in America event in Valhalla, New York, Biden talked about his meeting with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who, in his words, demanded the funding to go to the 2022 level through certain cuts, which does not include defense. "You're not gonna cut Medicare and security," Biden threatened. He insisted that the cuts the Republicans are seeking would cost the US 780,000 jobs.
Biden also noted that certain Republicans in Congress, such as Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, understand the country cannot default due to all the damage that would cause, including pushing the economy into a recession.
