United States President Joe Biden insisted on Wednesday that Russia violated core tenants of the United Nations Charter by invading Ukraine. "In the last year, our world has experienced great upheaval... a brutal, needless war. A war chosen by one man," Biden opened his speech before the United Nations General Assembly.
Biden denied claims made by Russian President Vladimir Putin that Moscow "had to act" because it was threatened, asserting that no threats were made by western countries. Instead, Moscow's primary goal is to extinguish Ukraine's right to exist as a state, the president stressed.
"We will stand in solidarity with Ukraine," Biden vowed, explaining that the US is "determined to defend and strengthen democracy - at home and around the world." Commenting on the food crisis, he insisted sanctions against Russia haven't targeted agriculture exports and that Moscow is to blame for the worsening food insecurity.
