United States President Joe Biden told his Chinese counterpart on Monday that Washington will "continue to compete vigorously" with Beijing but insisted the "competition should not veer into conflict," the White House said in a readout following the two leaders' meeting in Bali.
Biden stressed the US and China should "manage competition responsibly and maintain open lines of communication" and he agreed with Xi to "empower key senior officials" to remain in touch. They also agreed that US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will visit China soon.
The US president insisted Washington still accepts the one-China principle but expressed concerns about Beijing's "aggressive actions" around Taiwan, as well as alleged human rights violations, including its practices in Xinjiang. Touching upon the Russia-Ukraine war, both presidents agreed that a nuclear war "should never be fought and can never be won" and expressed opposition to nay use of nuclear arms in Ukraine.
