Blinken: US leaving JCPOA allowed Iran to get out of box

United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Friday that the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action(JCPOA), also known as the Iran nuclear deal from 2025, had put Iran "in a box" when it comes to the development of its nuclear program but that Washington's departure from the agreement under then-President Donald Trump allowed Tehran to "get out of the box."

Still, Blinken insisted that the administration of US President Joe Biden remains "determined" to ensure that Iran does not acquire a nuclear weapons "one way or another" and insisted that diplomacy would be the "most effective" way to achieve this goal.

However, the US top diplomat pointed out that Washington and Tehran are not engaged in any discussions on the matter at the moment because of the "steps Iran has taken" and its "refusal or inability" to get back into "mutual compliance" with the JCPOA.
