Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro requested on Thursday that federal authorities give him back his passport so that he could accept Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's invitation to the country.
His attorneys revealed in a statement that an official request to the Supreme Court was submitted earlier on Monday. The ex-head of state's passport was confiscated in February following a Federal Police raid, which was prompted by suspicions that he and his aides were allegedly plotting a coup after losing the presidential elections in 2022.
Meanwhile, earlier, Brazilian media reported that Netanyahu sent a letter of invitation to Bolsonaro only a week after Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was declared persona non grata following his Holocaust comments. In the letter, the Israeli prime minister praised Bolsonaro, stating that during his presidency the relations between the two countries "reached new heights."
