Borrell: 2030 not deadline for Ukraine's EU accession

European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell stressed on Friday that 2030 is not a firm date for Ukraine's accession to the EU, but rather a target one.

"This is the political horizon. The purpose of fixing a date is just to mobilize political energy in order to start moving. It's good to have a horizon, it's good to have a target. It doesn't mean that this has to be a precise date," Borrell stated on his arrival at the European Political Community's continued meeting in Spain.

Borrell explained that Ukraine, as the last country to submit its bid, now has to "push the queue" in which it is preceded by 10 other candidate countries. He added that the European bloc has to move faster on granting new accessions.
