Finnish racecar driver Valtteri Bottas will leave Mercedes and join Alfa Romeo for the 2022 Formula One season, the Stellantis NV-owned team announced on Monday.
"I am relishing the opportunity to help lead the team forward up the grid, especially with the new regulations in 2022 giving the team a chance to make a leap in performance," Bottas said. He will thus be replacing his compatriot Kimi Raikkonen, who will retire from professional racing after this year's season ends.
Bottas has been competing for Mercedes since 2017, having previously raced for Williams from 2013 to 2016. He is currently the third in the 2021 championship.
