A YouGov poll released on Wednesday shows that only 30% of Britons now believe the UK was right to vote for Brexit in 2016, while 55% say it was the wrong choice. This marks the lowest level of support for the decision since the polling began after the referendum.
Five years after Britain formally exited the EU on January 31, 2020, the current backing for withdrawal contrasts sharply with the 46% support recorded in August 2016. Among ‘Leave’ voters, 18% now believe Brexit was a mistake, although 66% still defend the decision. Only 7% of ‘Remainers’ share that view, with 88% maintaining that leaving the EU was wrong.
In the latest poll, which surveyed 2,225 adults, 55% think leaving was a mistake, while 30% still stand by the decision. This is a shift from a February 2020 survey, conducted shortly after Brexit officially took place, where 46% viewed it negatively and 43% supported the move.
