United States President Joe Biden delivered remarks at the 27th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27) in Sharm El-Sheik, Egypt. Biden began his speech on Friday with a tribute to US military veterans and in particular Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, John Kerry.
Reiterating the first moves of his administration, Biden apologized for the Trump administration's decision to withdraw from the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change, which his office overturned shortly after the transfer of power. Biden called for major emitting nations to align with the agreement's 1.5 °C target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and limit global warming.
The president also confirmed the US plans to meet its emissions targets by 2030, cutting emissions by about 50% below 2005 levels. It's more urgent than ever to reaffirm commitments to fighting against climate change, Biden stressed, concluding that "the science is devastatingly clear."
