Peru declared a state of emergency in the capital of Lima and three other regions as protests continued to rock the country. The measure will remain in place for 30 days and will allow the government to suspend the right to assembly, as well as enable the military to intervene in the protests.

At least 42 people have been killed in the riots as demonstrators took to the streets following the removal of former President Pedro Castillo. His Vice President Dina Boluarte replaced him after he attempted to dissolve the Congress in December. Boluarte agreed to schedule a general election for 2024, which did little to calm the protests.
