Canada's retail sales increased by 0.9% in April compared to the previous month to reach $60.7 billion and surpass market estimates, according to a report published by Statistics Canada on Tuesday.
Sales expanded in six out of 11 subsectors, led by higher sales at general merchandise stores. Core retail sales rose by 1% in April to mark a fourth consecutive month of expansion and the ninth in the last 11 months.
Preliminary results also pointed toward a 1.6% increase in retail sales during May, however, the figure is likely to be revised.
