Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz held a phone call on Thursday to discuss the impacts of newly imposed US tariffs and the global trade crisis.
"We agreed to strengthen the diverse trade relationship between Canada and Germany," Carney said in a post on social platform X. "As we face the crisis caused by President [Donald] Trump's tariffs, reliable trade partners are more important than ever," he added.
The day before, Trump announced 25% tariffs on all vehicles made outside the US, directly affecting the Canadian and European auto industry. Additionally, he hit the EU with 20% reciprocal tariffs, while 25% tariffs on goods coming from Canada were announced in March.
