Canada said on Wednesday that it is not surprised by United States President Donald Trump's remarks that he expects the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) renegotiations will not be successful and the deal will be terminated. A Canadian government official claimed the country always "felt it was likely" Trump would threaten to leave NAFTA at some point.
During a rally in Phoenix on Tuesday, the US president stated he believes the US will not be able to "make a deal" with the two other North American countries and they will "end up probably terminating NAFTA at some point." Mexico's Secretary of Foreign Affairs Luis Videgaray called Trump called Trump's comments a "negotiation strategy."
Canada, Mexico and the US, the three signatories of the 1994 trade deal, started formal negotiations to make changes to NAFTA last week after Trump criticized the agreement, claiming it was unfavorable for the US and calling it "the worst economic development deal ever signed by any country anywhere in the world."
