Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney responded after United States President Donald Trump raised tariffs on certain Canadian goods from 25% to 35%.
The higher tariffs target exports not covered under the North American trade deal between Canada, the United States and Mexico (USMCA). Carney said Canada remains committed to the deal but called the new US move "disappointing." Carney criticized Washington's justification for the tariffs, which blamed cross-border fentanyl flows, noting that Canada accounts for just 1% of fentanyl entering the US.
The government pledged support for industries hit by US tariffs and promised to strengthen domestic trade, boost exports and invest in national projects. "We can give ourselves more than any foreign government can ever take away," Carney said.
