High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said on Friday that the bloc has "grave concern over the steps taken by China" regarding the Hong Kong security bill that has been passed yesterday by the country's parliament.
Relations between the EU and Beijing are "based on mutual respect and trust," Borrell stressed, but noted that yesterday's "decision calls this into question" as the new legislation may impact Hong Kong's "high degree of autonomy."
The EU's senior official noted that the bloc currently has no plans for imposing sanctions against China.
