Chinese Premier Li Qiang (pictured) said on Wednesday the world must stand against the outbreak of a new Cold War, pointing out the importance of the Washington-Beijing relations to the region and their role in addressing global issues.

"This is directly relevant to ASEAN, as tensions can easily fuel existing flash points in the region, undermining the peace, prosperity and stability we have all enjoyed for decades," the premier said in his speech at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in Jakarta.

In addition, Li called for stronger cooperation between ASEAN and Beijing concerning the South China Sea issue in order to "maintain regional peace" and "stability."
