Deputies to the 14th National People's Congress (NPC), China's national legislature, unanimously elected incumbent President Xi Jinping for his third consecutive term on Friday.
Xi first became president in 2013 and abolished term limits in 2018, making today's vote unprecedented. The leader was concurrently appointed China's Chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC).
The head of state will remain in office for another 5 years, while the newly selected Han Zheng will serve as vice president of China.
