The Chinese Ministry of Commerce responded to the announcement of the new 10% tariff on all Chinese goods imposed by United States President Donald Trump calling it a "serious violation" of World Trade Organization (WTO) rules.

The Chinese ministry stated that these measures were damaging to both economic and trade cooperation between the US and China. It also urged "the United States to rectify its erroneous approach, and to work with the Chinese side to face up to the problem, engage in frank dialogue, strengthen cooperation and manage differences on the basis of equality, mutual benefit and mutual respect."

The ministry stated that it plans to file a lawsuit with the WTO against the US for "wrongful practice" and it promised to take countermeasures to safeguard its own rights and interests."
