China against unilateral sanctions on N. Korea

China’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi (pictured) told his Japanese counterpart Fumiko Kishida on Thursday that the country is against imposing unilateral sanctions on North Korea, CNBC reported.

Even though Wang said China opposed Pyongyang’s nuclear testing, he claimed unilateral sanctions would not contribute to relieving the tensions on the Korean Peninsula. The minister added that China is willing to cooperate with the international community to appropriately respond to last week’s nuclear tests by North Korea.

Kishida told Wang during their phone call that Pyongyang’s actions pose a threat to Japan and asked for China’s help in taking action as it is a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.

Following Pyongyang’s latest nuclear test, the United States said it was prepared to implement unilateral sanctions against North Korea.
