China's National Health Commission estimated that almost 37 million people were infected with COVID-19 on December 20 alone, the Times reported on Friday citing a leaked memo. Officially, China saw 3,049 cases on that day, as the country stopped enforcing mass testing.
According to the report, Chinese health authorities determined the number of cases since the start of December has surpassed 248 million, or 17.5% of the overall population. Earlier this week, the World Health Organization expressed concern about the spread of the virus in China and urged it to strengthen its vaccination efforts.
