Chinese Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao met with European Commissioner for Internal Market Thierry Breton on Friday to discuss bilateral trade as well as issues pertaining to the electric vehicle industry, supply chains, and fifth-generation (5G) technology, the ministry revealed in the statement.

The Chinese commerce minister expressed Beijing's hope for the European Union to "abide by the WTO [World Trade Organization] rules" that would create a "non-discriminatory" environment for bilateral economic and trade cooperation. Breton said that the bloc attaches "great importance" to its economic relations with China, highlighting the Union's willingness to "build a stable" and "mutually trusting supply chain" with Beijing.

Last month, the Commission formally opened the anti-subsidy probe into electric vehicles coming from China.
