Chinese Premier Li Qiang nominated Yi Gang (pictured) to stay on as governor of the People's Bank of China in a surprise move during the meeting of the 14th National People's Congress.

Yi, who reached retirement age, had been expected to step down but was instead appointed a member of the standing committee of Beijing's top political body, the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, enabling him to remain in his post despite his years.

Liu Kun kept his position as finance minister, while Wang Wentao will continue to be commerce minister.
