Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin slammed on Friday Japan's decision to start releasing contaminated water from Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant into the sea, calling it "extremely selfish and irresponsible."

"The Japanese side must change its course so that the water of Fukushima will not be the shame of Japan," Wang said, adding that China and other countries have the "right and responsibility to take legitimate legal and reasonable measures" to protect the environment and the wellbeing of its people.
