Chinese military on Thursday stopped a US destroyer that entered waters near the Paracel Islands in the South China Sea without Chinese government approval, The Southern Theatre Command of the People's Liberation Army announced.

Beijing condemned the "provocative actions" by the United States, warning Washington of serious consequences in case such moves are made in the future.

In the past, Washington had criticized Beijing's maritime claims, after which the country advised the US against taking sides on issues of territorial sovereignty.
