The Chinese Embassy in South Korea issued an advisory to its citizens on Tuesday, urging them to remain calm and vigilant following the announcement of emergency martial law by South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol. Chinese nationals were also advised to avoid expressing political opinions publicly and to comply with official orders from the South Korean government during this time.
This advisory came after President Yoon Suk-yeol declared martial law. The military issued orders banning political activities and protests. Reports from the media also indicated that clashes at the national parliament occurred as special forces took control under the new measures.
The martial law declaration caused South Korean won to plummet to a two-year low and US-listed shares of South Korean firms to decline following the emergency laws' announcement. Also, the US announced it is "closely monitoring" the situation.
