Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said on Wednesday that the United States "connives and supports secessionists to create trouble" as Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen travels to the US. China said Tsai intends to "advocate for Taiwan's independence," adding that any contact between the Taiwanese government and Wahington violates the one-China principle.

Mao repeated that China "firmly opposes" Tsai's visit and said China is not "overreacting" on the issue. Previously, China warned it will "definitely take measures to resolutely fight back" if Tsai meets with US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.
