Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian criticized on Tuesday United States Vice President JD Vance for his comments on US-China trade. In an interview last week, Vance said the US borrows money "from Chinese peasants to buy the things those Chinese peasants manufacture." Lin replied that it is "surprising and sad to hear such ignorant and impolite words from this vice president."

Lin added that China will "continue to take resolute and strong measures to safeguard our legitimate rights and interests" after US President Donald Trump threatened to impose another 50% tariff on Chinese exports. He noted that Washington's actions do not reflect a "willingness to have serious talks" to resolve the trade dispute and suggested it should show "equality, respect and reciprocity" toward Beijing.
