Chinese hackers reportedly breach US foreign investment committee

LEWIS KANG'ETHE NGUGI / UNSPLASH

Chinese hackers are said to have infiltrated the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), CNN reported on Friday citing three individuals familiar with the matter.

The government office in question is responsible for reviewing foreign investments for national security risks, and the attack seems to be part of a wider incursion into the Treasury Department’s unclassified system. As per the report, a possible motivation was the body's power to block Chinese investment in the country as tensions between Washington and Beijing remain high.
